The
Residency
About the residency
Artists invited to the End of Summer residency will live and work in Portland, Oregon for four weeks each August, from August 1st through August 31st.
During the course of the four week program, the group of six artists will participate in a series of program activities that will connect them with Portland's art community and engage them in opportunities for critical artistic reflection. The diverse activities include studio visits and exhibition tours, which are scheduled for each morning of the program, leaving the rest of the day for artists to work in the studio or explore the city further.
The End of Summer lecture series is a core aspect of the residency program, organized to introduce artists to important voices in diverse fields of art historical, philosophical, and cultural study. Each week a notable guest speaker will share their work with the artists at public lecture events.
It is required that artists participate in all of the program activities and attend the lectures. Outside of this, how artists choose to utilize their residency stay to benefit their art practice is up to them. At the end of the residency, there is an open studio event in which the public is invited to visit with the artists in their studios. There is no planned exhibition at the end of the residency, however the program is open to working with artists to help organize any particular projects or presentations of their work they have in mind.
Locations
Upon completion in 2025, artists will be assigned their own studio space at the new Japan Institute campus. The studios vary in size and assignment is determined by the needs of the artists according to their intended usage of the studio.
Housing accommodations for the residency are located on the Japan Institute campus which is a beautifully wooded and secluded location. However, the campus is also not far from Portland’s galleries and cultural attractions and public transportation.
Artists should expect to share a bunk room with fellow artists of the program. Each artist will have their own bed, secure storage locker and access to share bathrooms and kitchen.
Expenses
The program is pleased to be able to provide airfare, housing and art studio space for each artist in residence. Artists should prepare for material costs related to studio work they intend to do, and daily living expenses. Additionally, all artists must acquire travel insurance before arriving in Portland.
